Understanding Causes and Solutions for Foggy Windows

Window Condensation is a natural phenomenon that occurs when moisture in the air comes into contac t with a surface that is cooler than the dew point temperature causing the moisture to condense into water droplets. There are primarily two types of condensation associated with windows, interior and exterior condensation.

Condensation indoors typically forms on the inside of windows and doors due to high humidity levels and inadequate air exchange within the home. Energy-efficient windows, designed to minimize heat loss can exacerbate this issue by reducing air flow. To reduce interior condensation, you can decrease moisture sources indoors such as humidifiers or aquariums, increase ventilation by opening windows periodically)and leave interior shades slightly raised to facilitate air circulation.

On the other hand, exterior condensation occurs when moist air encounters the cooler surface of windows, much like how dew forms on grass during the night. This phenomenon is more common with energy-efficient windows because they effectively insulate the interior, keeping the exterior glass temperature lower. Exterior condensation is actually a sign that energy-efficient windows are functioning optimally, as they reduce heat loss and contribute to lower utility costs. It typically occurs during transitional seasons like spring and fall when there’s a significant temperature difference between day and night.

Additionally, moisture buildup between the panes of glass indicates a potential issue with the window’s insulation, which should be addressed promptly to maintain energy efficiency and prevent further damage.

Understanding the causes of condensation and taking appropriate measures can help manage indoor humidity levels, maintain window performance, and ensure comfort within the home. If condensation troubles persist beyond your control, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’ll help clear the fog and restore clarity to your view.
